A key breaking off mid-turn is a different problem to being locked out, and it's worth treating it differently too. The lock itself is often still fine - it's just got half a key sitting inside it - and how you handle the next few minutes decides whether that stays a quick fix or turns into a full lock replacement.

Why keys snap in the first place

Keys don't usually snap for no reason. The most common causes are simple wear - a key that's been used thousands of times gradually weakens along its length - and cold weather, which makes metal more brittle and more likely to fail under the same pressure that wouldn't normally trouble it. A worn or stiff lock mechanism that needs extra force to turn is another common cause, since that added pressure is exactly what a weakened key can't handle.

A cheap or poorly cut key is another frequent culprit. A key cut slightly wrong puts uneven pressure on the metal every time it's used, and that stress builds up over months until it fails without warning, often at the most inconvenient possible moment.

Don't try to remove it yourself

It's tempting to reach for pliers, tweezers, or anything thin enough to grab the broken end, but this usually pushes the fragment further in or snaps it again, smaller and harder to reach. Superglue and similar "quick fix" tricks you'll find online tend to make things worse too, often gluing the mechanism itself rather than just the key. Leave the broken key where it is and avoid turning or forcing anything else in the lock until it's been looked at properly.

Locked in or locked out?

This matters more than it might seem. If you're locked inside with the broken key still in the lock, check whether there's another way out in case of a fire or other emergency while you wait for help. If you're locked outside, follow the same basic checks as any lockout - another door or window, a spare key held by a neighbour or family member - before assuming you're stuck until a locksmith arrives.
